Architectural Elements & Themes

Architectural elements are perhaps one of the most important features if any kind of structure is to be given to a mural project. Often overlooked, the architectural elements will give style and historical placement.

A landscape or figurative scene will be much enhanced by appropriate framing or ornamentation and the structural support (i.e. the wall ) will hold all of these elements.

Often the architecture may be painted stone or plaster colours and will stand somewhat forward from the main design. This so called stone work will have “trompe l’oeil” framing and mouldings added to it to complete the final illusion. So the importance of a theme might well define the architectural elements in the picture or in it’s surrounding.

Finding the Right Framing

Themes for architectural elements are rather like business mission statements and one can make up appropriate and relevant stories to stir the imagination. If a new idea does not quite fit into the mission statement, then the idea should be modified. This is particularly important at the beginning of a project when one is feeling one’s way into a theme.
